PREVIEW: “Funk Soul Brothers” @ Record Bar w/ Ozgood, Fat Sal, Nezbeat & Miles Bonny [06.01.12]

Kansas City-San Francisco extract, DJ Ozgood, and Lawrence-San Francisco extract, Nezbeat, are coming back home for what’s guaranteed to be your best dance option on Friday, June 1st in the “Funk Soul Brothers” party at Record Bar. Joining them are KC-residents, DJs Miles Bonny and Fat Sal.

Having Ozgood and Fat Sal back together on the turntables should be a real treat. The two selectors were best known back in the day for holding down Thursday nights at Jilly’s on Broadway from 2003-2006. In fact, a Demencha contributor once wrote in our print zine about the successful dance night, “The salt from my sweat completely blinding me wasn’t just an exceptional night, it was the standard.” Expect that standard to return to form, at least for one night, while these four taste-makers take you on a jam-filled journey to reaches outside of your own conception of what a dance party can be. One thing that really set off Sal and Ozgood’s parties at Jilly’s was the vibe, an essential element for any successful dance weekly. In addition, we can’t really lie and say that Nezbeat behind the turntables wasn’t a surprise. But all four of these DJs are probably going to come out of left-field and throw all types of luscious dance music at you.

We’ll see you on the dancefloor at Record Bar on Friday, June 1st, and hopefully we can get an exclusive mix from Ozgood in the meantime before he jets back to KC for this party. Until then, let these tasty dance treats from his Afrolicious parties in SF wet your appetite.

The latest “bust” remix from Georgia’s HeRobust challenges what’s probably the hottest rap artist in the South right now in Future. You may remember a couple of remixes we recently featured from HeRobust in recent weeks (HERE), which we absolutely loved. But on this latest reworking, HeRobust takes the trap out of Future’s original and breaks out the bro-step. In the same damn breath, this “Same Damn Time” bust would probably go over well in the right room, but I’m not sure there’s too much anyone could do to make Future’s track worth more than a couple of listens. Sorry, I just really dislike Future. With that being said, be your own judge and listen below. Locally-based DJ, vinyl enthusiast, MC and producer, Z-Sonic, recently saw one of his latest moombahton songs, “I Need You Close”, catch a tracklist slot on the Ginger Shinobi-presented, Moombahdeep Vol. 2. If you remember, Z-Sonic also grabbed some light from one of his tracks featured on Moombahdeep Vol. 1 as well (RIGHT HERE). As any budding (no pun intended) producer should, his own original productions keep improving. The seven-minute deep “I Need You Close” offers a glimpse to what we hope should be some increasingly gleaming tracks from him in the coming weeks, months and beyond.

LA’s verBS Set to Return With “The Progress 3: Manifest Awesome” EP

Here are a couple of tracks (one video and one soundclouder) off LA-based MC, verBS’ upcoming EP “The Progress 3: Manifest Awesome”. Whenever I come across a new promo track from verBS I always revert back to a show he performed at in Lawrence opening for MURS at the Jackpot about two years ago. After picking up the original Progress EP from him after that show, I couldn’t help but feature one track off that release on our year-end 2010 music picks. verBS strikes us as the type of rapper who has genuine skills, but coupled with a genuine love for making music. Check out the links below for further information on verBS. At this time, we’re not sure what the release date is for “Progress 3″, but we’ll be eagerly awaiting.

Underground Revolution Showcase w/ Mad Marlon & More @ Riot Room [05.19.12]

Fresh off a tour opening for Bone Thugs over the course of about 15 city dates around the US, KCK’s Mad Marlon has finally made his phrase “Yak Yak!”, his “Mad Bag” merchandise packages, and uhhh…oh yeah, his exhilarating, club-shaking, roof-raising live shows a real point with fans all over. Though we’ve been up on Marlon for several years, it sounds as though he’s very quietly making a case for what could be the beginning of a small, “cult-like” following, much the way Tech N9ne did it. The thing a lot of artists fail to remember when hitting the road out of town is that the live show element has got to be on point. You’ve got to make sure these people who’ve never seen you before will remember you, moving forward. I remember the first time I came across a Mad Marlon song.

It was on a DJ Fresh mixtape from probably 2007 or so. I heard his track “K-Town” and thought this guy had to be like, 8 feet tall, 400 pounds or something. Marlon’s hyper-aggressive raps unfold appropriately in a brawny, beastly live show. A Mad Marlon show in front of a Westport crowd is rather rare, but Saturday night at Riot Room you can catch him with XTA-C (aka “Mr. So Heavy”) and Nelson El and see what thousands across the country have witnessed already. Big, big, big time props and respect to Mad Marlon aka “The Wyandotte Ambassador” for keeping this rap thing chugging along. Hard work pays off, indeed.

PREVIEW: Les Izmore, Soft Reeds, Diverse & More @ Record Bar (18+) [05.19.12]

This Saturday at Record Bar in Westport, MC Les Izmore and D/Will, The Record Machine’s Soft Reeds, Diverse Jazz Trio and Greg Enemy should pack the house with their all-local lineup. Each of these acts have their own built-in fanbases ranging from indie rock to hip hop and jazz. The featured performance, Izmore, D/Will and Diverse, should be the real catch here for any local music lover. I saw them at Middle of the Map Fest last month at the Riot Room wherein something purely magical happened on stage. Diverse Trio’s piercing trumpet sounds, upright bass and shimmering drum play grouped with D/Will’s beats and Izmore’s raw, unrelenting flow made for probably the best moment that I saw at the whole fest. We’re not sure if these guys have been rehearsing for this show, but if they have in fact been practicing, you might just walk away from Record Bar on Saturday night with a real lesson in live music performance.
