Meet Jeffrey Bass. The Kansas City-based one-man house/techno act and resident u:move DJ recently played Frost and has been holding down the We Love Techno residency at Czar Bar for one year. You can check that night out the fourth Saturday of each month. I’m not sure who took this picture, but I was happy when I saw it this morning on facebook. The aim of KANSASANITY, a brand of t-shirts under the Demencha umbrella, is currently being revamped, much like the print magazine…in whatever form that will take.

Here’s the latest mix from Jeff, uploaded two weeks ago (he’ll most likely have another mix up very soon today, so stay tuned to his soundcloud in a couple hours).

“The Smell of Fresh Cut Grass: An Ode To 90′s Summer Nostalgia,” a DJ mix by Chris Mills

This is a DJ mix/collection of early-mid 90’s r&b tracks that I grew up on. I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure everything on this mix was released before ‘97. This mix has local implications. If Kansas Citians will remember, Hot 103, the city’s main hip hop station, refused (for whatever reason) to play hip hop during the daytime in this period.

So what I and what I would imagine a lot of other people grew up on by listening to Hot 103 in elementary/middle school were the Aaliyah’s, SWV’s, Jodeci’s and Brandy’s of the world. You can make jokes all you want, but this is what I loved back then, and still do to this day. This is by no means a “best of” 90’s r&b mix, just a few tracks that I remember from back in the day. Mark my words, you will hear a few joints in this mix that you may have not heard in over a decade.

To start the set, I mixed Sublime’s “Summertime” (I still consider this song “90’s soul,” if you will) with Mariah’s “Always Be My Baby” in attempt to drive home the point that summer is always a great time to reflect and reminisce on summers past. Perhaps even more appropriately, the last song on this mix is Michael Jackson’s “Remember The Time.“ The smell of fresh cut grass never ceases to trip me out. Next thing you know, we’ll be dusting off the aluminum baseball bats from our parents’ basement to swat lightning bugs after sunset in the backyard.

Just making a friendly blog post letting you guys and gals know that we have brand spankin’ new t-shirts in right now, in addition to the new issue of Demencha Magazine throughout KCMO (available at Zebedee’s record store on 39th, Poptopia in Westport, Streetside Records in Westport, 7th Heaven on Troost and Screen Tee Gallery in Westport, right next to Firefly).

The idea for KANSASANITY came to me while coming home from an outdoor rave on the outskirts of Manhattan, KS, barreling down I-70 back in the fall of 2005. This play on words is intended to rhyme with “Kansas City,” so KCMO residents should not feel awkward about wearing one of our shirts today.

We are currently awaiting a confirmation for our trademark application for KANSASANITY filed last year. With the help of the good people at Screen Tee Gallery, a new indie clothing boutique in Westport, we now have our t-shirts in store. We will be pursuing more independent clothing shops in Lawrence and other parts of Kansas and KCMO very soon, in hopes that they will carry our shirts as well.

KC local, Mr. Nuro hit us up a few weeks ago and asked if he could do an exclusive mix for demencha.com. Besides the fact that we’ll take just about all the original content we can get, Nuro is a pretty nice DJ and we were anxious to see what he had up his sleeve for these proposed mixes. After knocking out these two mixes in the car today while running errands, I quickly came to realize that there is a theme with these two pieces, particularly in the first one – “Side A.” The first track on this mix pairs someone saying, “So, I’ve decided to take my work back underground. To stop it from falling into the wrong hands,” with the sound of fingers tapping on a typewriter. One thing’s for sure, this is not a mix that you’d typically hear from Mr. Nuro, at least not what you would usually hear from him when he spins live. Most of the tracks, particularly on Side A, are kind of bizarre. Songs about brainwashing, hearing voices and various other dementia-like traits all play key roles in giving this mix some personality (issues).

Demencha.com: For The Seeds!!!

Someone named Will kept throwing up a bunch of comments here on demencha over the past couple of weeks. I had no idea who he was until he pointed me out last night at the Record Bar and had me figured out as the author of this super cool local music blog. He said that it was cool that there’s a hip hop blog in KC, among other things. He had actually picked up Ron Ron’s brand new mixtape earlier that day at 7th Heaven, which I had totally forgotten about. (I just got back from 7th Heaven, just now myself). Come to find out the lad is just 13 years old. Apparently his dad was taking him around to all these spots last night, including the Tech N9ne show at the Granada in Lawrence. His dad was super cool too. They both showed appreciation for the magazine/blog. When Will went up to 7th Heaven earlier in the day, he said he looked for a new copy of the magazine, but couldn’t find it…hopefully they’ve all been snatched up already (SHOUT OUT TO 7TH HEAVEN). But I got him and his dad a copy while there at the Record Bar. I walked out to the car with Will and his dad and gave him a KANSASANITY t-shirt (more on that later). The smallest size we had was a large at the time, so I gave it to him and said, “you’ll grow into it.” Hopefully this kid will come out to more hip hop shows with his dad until he turns 21, because we need young kids at hip hop/rap/DJ events around town. Kinda eerie, because Phantom, King Reel, Dutch and Atilla talked about this exact same thing in the story I did with them for the current issue that’s out now (pictured).

This song never really saw the light of day, as far as official releases go, because the Michael Jackson sample couldn’t be cleared for this track. They ended up toning down this version for another version that ended up making the cut for the Speedknot Mobstaz album that came out around 97-98. Johnny P (of Do Or Die’s “Po Pimpin” fame) sings the hook. It’s kinda hilarious. Big shout out to DJ Shad for hooking us up with this a few months ago.

I just had a real inspiring talk with DJ Just tonight at the Record Bar, where you can catch him spinning records most Monday nights also. Instead of heading off to Missy B’s, which would’ve been my first time going…and I’m glad I didn’t (I still got that mix for you Cheri!), I decided to come home after the Record Bar closed at 1:30 and at least tell my readers what’s been going on lately with me lately. And particularly, why I haven’t blogged for shit basically, over the past 6 months or so with a few exceptions.

In addition to trying to get a new issue of Demencha out by the middle of August (we’ll see how advertising rolls in), I’ve been working with a really dope graphic designer here in KC who should have the final drafts of the KANSASANITY t-shirt graphics done by the middle of next week. If you got the latest issue of Demencha, and read the Editor’s Note, you may be familiar with the KANSASANITY project. We’re trying to do a line of mixtapes in addition to this little clothing line under this name, but all under the Demencha umbrella. And for you copy cats out there, don’t try running with KANSASANITY…we filed a trademark application for the name a couple of months ago which is still pending (fingers crossed). Trust me – we’re going to sell the shit out of these t-shirts.

Overall, I think the magazine has been going well since we started up last July. When people get a new copy, they sometimes seems surprised and say, “already?” even though we’ve only been publishing quarterly (that’s FOUR issues since we officially restarted the project last July. If you’re missing some or all of them, get at me at demenchamag@hotmail.com). We’ve distributed – either passed out or sold – around 3,500 copies since we started last summer, and that’s mostly in Midtown and Westport. Though I have been getting out to the Crossroads District a lot more within recent months.

Facebook has also been fucking up my blog game, too. It’s the gateway drug between myspace and twitter.

Whenever we get the summer/fall issue of Demencha out (still shooting for mid-August), you can count on a cover story on Hearts of Darkness on one side, and on the other side, a feature on Ron Ron and Stik Figa who’ve been working together on a project for a couple of months now. I’m super geeked out over this story particularly, because Ron Ron is definitely my favorite rapper out, while a lot of my friends’ favorite rapper is Stik.

In the guts, we’ll have a piece on O.V.E.R.K.I.L.L., a group consisting of rappers Amnezia, Bucc$ and Joe Black, a Queens-KC transplant. Also, you’ll find stories on Dutch, Craig, Greg, Atilla, Phantom and King Reel, who are probably going to talk in their interview quite a bit about why they don’t want to be lumped together as “The Young Lions” anymore.

We’ll also have a piece on Icy Rock, who we’re going to bill as “The Quincy Jones of Kansas City.” We’ll feature a review on Steddy P’s new and unheard album, which is shaping up to be rather smashing. Kalie Mashaney, the girl who wrote the piece in our latest issue about “Why The Ting Tings Suck,” has been granted her own column that we’re going to call “Why This Band Sucks” from here on out. In the upcoming issue, she’s going to talk about her adolescant fascination with Blink 182, why they tricked her into thinking she was “punk,” why the band fell off so hard, and why no one cares about their comeback. This article is an absolute riot and may be the funniest thing I’ve ever read in my entire life. She should seriously be getting paid to write about what she writes about. But don’t tell her I said that (shh!!).

And, we’ll have brand new, unseen artwork by Lucid (one of the dopest artists in the city without question). I feel like his art really was the selling point to a lot of people I pitched copies to with previous issues on the street/ in venues, etc. So yea, Lucid is back contributing for us, as well.

That’s about it for now. Except for this video. This was shot and edited by Icy Rock, who’s getting into film production as well as the music stuff that he’s become known for over the years. Most of it was shot at the Taste of Troost fest on the 4th of July, which I attended. You can actually catch an interview they did with me for a couple of minutes starting at the 3:10 mark. I look tired and stoned in the video…and I don’t even smoke weed. You can also find pictures from that event just a little ways down on this page.

Oh yea! About the talk I had with DJ Just tonight – he basically gave me a pep talk on why I should update the blog more often, and not let it fall off. He made me realize that if I keep at it I could have one of the dopest blogs in the city, if not the dopest. And I will say, that what separates Demencha mag and Demencha.com from other media in town is that we don’t have an agenda to cover, i.e. just this crew, or only this part of town, so on and so forth.

OK. I’ve been writing for two hours. Off to bed. And I will be back tomorrow. ;)
