Huey P. Nuisance’s previous release, the “Valley of the Beast” mixtape, wasn’t as crispy as it could’ve been, but apparently the Kansas City rapper has found a new recording home. Or perhaps it’s the magic touch from DJ KuTTack, who’s listed in the mixing and mastering credits. Regardless, Huey’s latest EP, “I’m Just Happy to Be Here”, is a big leap, though only four songs deep. It’s a quick listen, which is what EPs are supposed to be. Inside the pristine shell that is his newest release, Huey pours his heart out over four beats which see DJ Hylanda and Dan Matic splitting the production duties.
“Cord Jump” breaks down as an autobiographical track, detailing his college days in Warrensburg at CMSU to relocating to Kansas City, gaining respect from local scene OGs, Heet Mob, and having his “eyes on the prize, feet on the ground” all the while. Hylanda’s floating instrumental allows Huey to open up the EP with room to breathe.
The following, “Rework”, ups the intensity with producer, Dan Matic. The flute sounds dug up on the strength of Matic’s sample-heavy, hip hop bass style merged with Huey P’s enthusiastic hook and passionate verses create the standout track. Huey’s syllable control is in full effect on this one, and like any Heet Mob member, he does not fumble his vocabulary unlike some area rappers. “The Eulogy” is a minor slip up, one with singing from Huey that we could do without. The song is just kind of flat from the inside out. The last track, “War Crimes”, is a chest-puffing posse cut featuring Joe Carter, Reign and R.A.M.
While we could’ve used some more tracks on this EP, it’s not a bad release, specifically considering that the Shameless MGMT crew is still beginning to get their feet wet. Huey P. Nuisance is a respectable MC who we look forward to hearing more from. Until a proper full-length or another mixtape comes out from Huey, consider these four songs as appetizers leading up to something more substantial, hopefully.
