The Afghan Whigs Cover Frank Ocean

Greg Dulli and the Whigs are back at it. The newly reformed Afghan Whigs are up to their old, sultry and groove-heavy tricks again as if they’d never taken a self-imposed 11-year hiatus. The boys are no strangers to covering R&B tracks or injecting some soul into their own brand of dark indie-rock, so I wasn’t entirely surprised to hear their impressive cover of Frank Ocean’s “Lovecrimes” this week. Frank (of Odd Future and Watch the Throne fame) seems to have been on the tip of the music world’s tongue recently with the release of his new full length album Channel Orange, and his confession recently on tumblr that he was once in love with another man. Add Dulli’s dirty and fleshy mouth organ to the list, as he raps his own world of seduction around Ocean’s tale of lust and obsession. One listen and I’m already convinced that the track was practically tailored for the group and that they should be playing this live at the pyramid tonight. (The MP3 is available as a free download through the Afghan Whigs’ official site.)
