We’ve got a couple of great shows this week coming up around town featuring both local and regional artists. Come beat the heat with me (the A.C. is out at my apartment) and head inside to our local venues this week and support the local music community:
During the last week of March, the Kansas City music community lost a great man and a great musician. Michael Corte was a creative and passionate young man who left us too soon. Mike’s optimism and endless drive were an inspiration to all that knew him, even in the last two years of his life when he was battling leukemia. Mike was known locally for his guitar work and songwriting in bands like The Beautiful Bodies, David Hasselhoff on Acid, Skyline, Character Flaw, Overcast and several other acts.
To honor Michael Corte’s memory along with raising funds and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Cancervive KC will host a night of music and art at Fat Fish Blue (Zona Rosa) in the Northland. The show starts at 6 o’clock and will run until the venue closes at midnight. There will be an all night happy hour and an art auction in addition to the music lineup, which will feature in order: Grasshopper, Baer and Ani Mal, Pescivito (former Demencha artist of the month), David George and a Crooked Mile, 77 Jefferson and finally David Hasselhoff on Acid. A five dollar donation will be collected at the door. All proceeds will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
On Friday of this week (July 27th), the Riot Room will play host to two of Demencha’s favorite artists, locals Soft Reeds and St. Louis’ own Sleepy Kitty. Garage/fuzz-rock duo Sleepy Kitty (another artist previously featured by Demencha) will be making their first trip to K.C. since appearing at the Middle of the Map Fest in March, while post-punk glam-rockers Soft Reeds are preparing to release their second full length album in the coming months. The show is presented by local label the Record Machine and entrance will cost a paltry $7. If you can find a cheaper Friday night date, then you better put a plastic ring on it and buy her a PBR.
