Dead Prez @ Riot Room [August 26th]

Now that we have your attention…

Classic hip hop records don’t come along very often. But Dead Prez‘s monstrous underground single from 2000, “Hip Hop”, will withstand rap music’s ever shrinking test of time, in an internet era where flavor of the month rappers’ 15 minutes of fame are usually cut well short. The NYC hip hop duo comprised of stic.man and M-1, have built a reputation spanning well over a decade for their politically and socially charged rap lyrics. But more importantly, in the context of this show on Sunday, August 26th, keep in mind that DP’s live shows do tend to come with a lot of surprises. They’ve been known to light dollar bills on fire and throw apples into the crowd, among other things in an effort to encourage healthy living and thinking outside the box. With home videos of citizen/police clashes being magnified more and more thanks to the internet, perhaps it was just a matter of time for the technology to catch up to Dead Prez’s music. Now if we could only get like, eight encores of “Hip Hop”, similar to how Jay-Z and Kanye West performed “Niggas In Paris” at Spring Center downtown last year, perhaps it would serve as just one very small piece of justice for some.

p.s. I’d like to think that everyone’s hoping Les Izmore gets selected as a local opener.
