Last night at The Union of Westport turned out to be one of those “I was there” parties. If you were there, you know what I’m talking about. If you weren’t, you missed the fuck out. Let me elaborate…
David Heartbreak, a moombahton producer/DJ don originally from Brooklyn now based in Charlotte, came through and demolished the outside patio at the Union just about eight hours ago. So much so that the patio was one in/one out by about 1:00 a.m. There was a point when I went back inside and saw the line of folks trying to get outside that I wished I hadn’t moved. By the time I did come back outside, he had chilled it out quite a bit, but kept the moombah vibe rolling with remixes of The Fugees‘ “Ready Or Not” and others. Then he kicked it back into high gear again. At one point, everyone was vibing to the extent that it appeared that the party was under a perma-grin warning. Fresh, smiling faces abounded abounded and bodies bounced across the concrete.
When Heartbreak dipped out of the harder stuff and began playing tracks like Sean Paul‘s “Get Busy”, Lumidee‘s “Never Leave You (Uh Oh)” and other popular originals, it was clear that this guy was in fact thinking behind the turntables and watching the crowd. In the Serato-age, this isn’t as standard as it should be. Massive props to Brent Tactic and Shaun Duval for pushing the moombahton sound so hard over the past several months. It’s finally starting to pay off. The moombahton movement in KC might have just hit a pinnacle last night. No matter how hungover you are at this moment (or whenever you wake up today), I think a lot of the Union’s party-goers last night will be waking up with that same smile draped across their faces.
