After embarrassing a few MCs nearly twice his age at rap battles around the city over the years, the young KC-based Abnorm seems to be on a distinguished road. I can’t help but shake the similarity between this new record from him (available at a Bandcamp link below) and The Enemy record that Joe Good, Godemis and Frame made when they were still in high school years ago. Though Abnorm will still occassionally rap about shoe laces and kush, he’ll also drop some pretty crazy lines, showing off his vibrant mic persona and reminding lesser rappers he’s not one to cross. Consider Abnorm the Katt Williams of KC rappers, with bold commentary blended with life-lessons-in-a-punchline, a’la Mac Lethal almost. At least six of the eighteen beats on this release were self-produced by Abnorm himself, with help from Nsane, Moodi, Maynard and others. You have to take Abnorm’s beats with a grain of salt, as he’s still trying to find his seam in hip hop.
But if you’ve seen Abnorm battle before (and I have) you know that he’ll leave a mark with you and you’ll probably remember his name by the end of the show, regardless of how he titled his latest record.

Dude definitely surprised me when I saw him beat Dutch Newman at the Record Bar earlier this year and I’ve been a fan every since. Not to mention the mixtape he handed me had a little bit of kush underneath the CD, ha.
