“Slaps.” “Knocks.” “Bangs.” “Bumps.” Whatever term you want to use would appropriately fit in filling the question, “How’s that new Stik Figa mixtape sound?” Okay, so maybe this mixtape caught a lot of you off guard, as it is the first official hip hop release out of Kansas City in 2010. But if this record is any indication of Stik and DJ Shad’s attitudes about leaving an awful 2009 behind into an optimistic 2010, slacking local rap artists should probably take note. Because after all, there’s no better way to let people know that you’re on top of your shit when you drop a record on New Years Day.

Fresh off the heels of his most recent release, Hellogoodbye, Stik ditches the more serious themes on that record in favor of a much more fun and buoyant vibe here on Still Aint Easy Bein’ Skinny. This one is a collection of some of Stik’s slightly older tracks, whether previously heard by anyone or not, and some newer ones, all mixed up DJ style by Shad.

The most prized track worth your listening time is Stik’s collaboration with Ron Ron (aka the Wiz Kidz) produced by Greg Enemy – “No Good,” which samples Ohio Players’ “Funky Worm.”

Stik flexes flow over some industry beats on Still Aint Easy Bein’ Skinny as well, including Young Buck’s “Get Buck,“ Souls of Mischief’s “93 Til’ Infinity” and Yung Wun’s “Tear It Up” among others, which see Stik going in on 18 of the toughest beats he’s spit over yet.

Whether it be a mixtape, album or EP, Stik Figa has never released a record like this before. This is much, much more of a Brainiak release than an INnatesounds Crew release (check the label logos on the back side cover art), but we can’t really hate on a “Jansport crowd” rapper doing music that you can actually blare.

Basically, it’s nice to hear the Stik man over some beefed up drums for once.

I just downloaded this. It’s an amazing mixtape although this is not the first KC Hip Hop release this year. KC landmark rapper, Paul Mussan just dropped an album today.
