I first heard about Below from Ms. Reno, O.V.E.R.K.I.L.L.’s manager a few weeks ago. Apparently he’s collaborated with Krizz Kalico in the past, but this shit is NUTS.

While rummaging through one of DJ Shad’s music hard drives a couple of months ago, I came across a song by Stik Figa (Topeka, KS) called “Part of Town.” The beat sounded familiar and I remembered it was from one of Miles Bonny’s old beat discs he was handing out at the Peanut back in 2006 or 2007. I wish I still had that CD. There were some great beats on it. This song, Stik says, is the first recorded track he made that convinced him that he was actually pretty tight at this rap shit. Back then, Miles was the first person to really start pushing Stik to record, and this song came out awesome. Apparently it came out on Stik’s Ill Roots release a couple of years ago. He performs one of the verses on this track, acapella, to open up all of his shows as a kind of “mic check,” which means if you’re a fan of Stik, this song will sound very familiar.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran into this cat from Miami at the Newsroom on Broadway who was in town on business. Vertigone introduced me to him and said that this Parable character was a former Scribble Jam and World Rap Championships contestant. A group of us chopped it up for a while on the patio and talked music. I sold him a copy of the magazine and a KANSASANITY t-shirt. Vertigone and Parable kept egging each other on to start freestyling, until Parable finally decided to go first and proceeded to freestyle about the new issue of Demencha as he flipped through it. As the Editor-in-Chief, I thought that was a lot of fun. I got Parable’s latest EP on CD from him that same night and decided to keep in contact with him since his disc was pretty nice and he struck me as a cool dude. Turns out he’s a dubstep head as well. You can defnitely hear an urgency in his voice, similar to that of Immortal Technique on tracks like “We At War,” but there’s also some super smooth stuff in this bunch also, which I prefer better. His bio says, “In early 2008, he organized, promoted, and performed at a series of events called Murk’d Miami, which became an integral part of Miami’s Hip-Hop scene, including locals as well as national performers such as Madlib.”
We will definitely be keeping track of what this dude is up to music wise in the future. Here are some of his best/boldest tracks that we have:
