I shot this video last night at Club 4400 at Heet Mob’s open mic night (every Monday). The featured performer is a spoken word/poetry guru – Kynan Ramsey aka “YEP” (Young Educated Poet). The dude is amazing at what he does. So is his little brother, Terrence, who’s spoken word alias is Lost Soul. Which brings me to a point. Terrence actually wrote a piece in our fall issue (WHICH IS AVAILABLE FOR TWO DOLLARS AT THE TOP OF THE MAGAZINE RACK AT 7TH HEAVEN ON TROOST) about Kynan, wherein Kynan actually penned a poem for us, in addition to the editorial and interview that Terrence did with him. Kynan has more videos of his performances on youtube – just search “Kynan Ramsey.” In this video, I turned on the cam in the middle of him shouting out Demencha Magazine, but that’s not really what I was trying to get on camera anyway. Just watch the video and you’ll see what I mean.

Kansas City breaks DJ, DJ Prato, of No Handed Music and the NSB radio show “Frosted Breaks,” has recently had his tune “Hotterdam” (Mr. No Hands Edit) named the number one breaks tune for the month of December by MIXMAG. This is kind of a big deal. But we’ll let Prato tell the rest:

“I’m thrilled to have my song selected as Mixmag’s Breaks tune for December. Things have really heated up this year production-wise. My first release, a remix for Systematica records, dropped the day after Christmas last year so it’s a trip to see a tune of the month honor a year later. I’ve been a sort of evangelist for the proper breaks sound with my NSB Radio show, Frosted Breaks. It’s great to be able to contribute to the scene.”

“I also can’t give enough props to what Mr No Hands is doing with his label. No Handed Music is so innovative with how they use video with every release. I’ve done two videos for my releases, which was almost harder than doing the tracks, and Dave No Hands has done nearly all the rest. The label has done a video for each of the releases this year. That’s 12 vids! Releasing a tune a month in one year is unheard of for any label, doing a video as well is amazing.”

Here is the music video for Prato’s “Hotterdam” (Mr. No Hands edit):

It’s great to hear breaks that don’t sound like the kind of stuff that we tend to get on KKFI and KRBZ (no disrespect to either station). Even the cheesy stuff has it’s place, and obviously it’s keeping ratings up at KRBZ on Saturday nights, but Prato’s tunes go hard. I remember the first and only time I saw him spin with RJ Bass at the Hangout in KC back in ‘06, I was blown away at the tracks they were playing. I could be wrong but I would say there’s a decent Chemical Brothers influence in his music.

James Christos is back. And as usual, he’s coming out of left field…again, which he seems to do with each release. The beat reminds me of a track off one of his old 12 inches “Let’s Grit.” Here, he’s bending pronunciations to rhyme with words that you wouldn’t expect them to work with, with pretty sharp precision.

In the 1995 season, I was watching a halftime highlight show one Sunday, in the middle of a Chiefs game, and they were showing highlights from the Steelers and Lions game. I didn’t see it live, of course, but I did see on this halftime show a clip of Barry Sanders breaking Rod Woodson’s ankle with a juke move he put on him. I finally found the video. Check it out! You have to wait until about the 2:36 mark of the video to see the juke/ankle breaking he put on Woodson. This is a legendary clip that sports fans have been searching for for YEARS. Thanksgiving hasn’t been the same since he retired.
